Animal Rights Activists Step Up Their Campaign Against Ungar Furs

'No more bullshit, no more lies! We will never compromise!'

The catchy pronouncement echoed outside Nicholas Ungar Furs this morning as members of the Portland Animal Defense League stepped up their protests aimed at shutting down Portland's last remaining fur salon (after Schumacher Furs left downtown).

"It's heartbreaking, that's why we're here,' said vegan activist Courtney Kintz as she passed out informational pamphlets to passersby and demonstrators staged what they termed an anti-fur fashion show. 'It's a morally schizophrenic issue.'

Protesters were decked out in mock fur and splattered with blood-red paint as they carried signs such as, '18 Red Foxes for 1 coat.'

Protesters promise no retreat against Ungar Furs, which has been the subject of protests since January. Kintz says demonstrators will continue to be posted outside from 1 pm to 5pm every Monday through Friday in hopes of making Portland the first 'fur-free' city in the United States.
Store owner Horst Grimm declined to comment this morning when contacted by Willamette Week, a weekly newspaper in Portland.
